What Is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia involves pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons, as well as fatigue. Most people with fibromyalgia experience systemic aching all over, including muscle twitching or burning. "Tender points" identified are unnaturally sensitive to touch. FMS may also be associated with sleep disturbances, morning stiffness, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, and other symptoms. More women than men are affected by symptoms.
How Fibromyalgia Begins
The cause of FMS or fibromyalgia symptoms remains a mystery but a number of triggering events are believed to precipitate its onset. They include a viral or bacterial infection, trauma such as an automobile accident or divorce, or the development of another disorder, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or hypothyroidism. These triggering events don't cause FMS, but may activate an underlying vulnerability.
How Common Is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia syndrome affects between 4 and 8 million North Americans. It primarily occurs in women of childbearing age, but children, the elderly, and men can also be affected. Following a fibromyalgia diet will alleviate many of the symptoms. What Are Fibromyalgia Symptoms?
A diagnosis is usually made after chronic, widespread pain has persisted for more than three months, and discomfort is present in at least 11 of 18 specific tender point sites. This condition is difficult to diagnose as many of the symptoms parallel those of other disorders.
What Are Your Risk Factors?
- Genetic predisposition. You could be more susceptible to develop this disease when there is a genetic history of fibromyalgia.
- Being of female gender. Approximately 70 to 90 percent of women suffer from fibromyalgia, whereas the statistics for men are much lower.
- Sleep disorders. Professionals are uncertain whether disrupted sleep patterns are a result or a cause of fibromyalgia. Many individuals with such disorders like “restless leg syndrome” and “sleep apnea” are more prone to develop this condition.
Fibromyalgia Wellness Tips
Individuals with fibromyalgia usually respond effectively to extensive treatments. There are several ways you can help control your condition:
- Get adequate sleep. The primary concern with fibromyalgia is fatigue. Therefore, it is important to get a sufficient amount of sleep. Developing a good sleep pattern will help you get into a regular routine. Limit your naps throughout the day, and try to go to sleep and wake up the same time each day.
- Try to minimize your stress. Take time out every day for some form of relaxation. Find ways to limit or avoid emotional stressors and overexerting yourself. Try not to modify your schedule entirely. Many individuals, who discontinue their activities or forgo work because of discomfort, may get worse compared to those who keep active.
- Exercise regularly. There are aerobic exercises such as walking, swimming and running that reduce the muscle pain caused by fibromyalgia. Moderate exercise is most beneficial when it is done on a regular basis. Initially, your pain may increase during exercise, but the symptoms will improve once the body gets accustomed to it. You should exercise at least four times a week for 20-30 minutes. Exercises such as yoga, pilates and stretching can be very beneficial.
- Develop a balanced lifestyle. Eat a healthy diet, reduce your caffeine consumption, exercise on a regular basis and get sufficient rest. Include activities that are enjoyable to you and are relaxing. See fibromyalgia recommendations.
- Regulate your activities. Try to be consistent with your activities. Don’t overdo it when you do have a good day, this may cause you to have more unproductive days.
- Talk to your physician or health care provider about new non-drug, food-based supplements developed to help advance the quality of life. Recovery™ with Nutricol™. has been formulated to increase circulation, accelerate tissue repair, and effectively stop tissue damage.

Fibromyalgia Treatment
The approach in treating fibromyalgia must be extensive. Exercise decreases muscle pain and improves muscle tone. Massage and heat usually provides temporary relief. Fibromyalgia treatment, antidepressant medications or natural applications may relax the muscles, elevate the mood, and improve sleep patterns. A combination of physical therapy, exercise, medications, and relaxation techniques are advisable with any fibromyalgia treatment.
